cookbookFive reasons for migrating to the new Illustrator CS4

Dmitri Joukov, 13 May 2009 Comments (2)

Adobe IllustratorReviewsTools

Illustrator CS4All new stuff is extremely lucrative: it lures a feeling of novelty and freshness. I sincerely believe that a newer version is always better than the previous one. But there is one software package that undermines my life views. I am talking about Adobe Illustrator. It gained so many useless functions that operational mistakes have become too easy to see. It all lasted for six passed years. Here is an appropriate time for a short sermon.

cookbookWindows 7: clothes count for first impressions

CriticismReviewsVisual style

Judging by the many online reviews, the brave souls who have downloaded and installed the beta version of Windows 7 are, in general, pleasantly surprised. Your humble servant likewise entered into the ranks of the brave souls. I confirm: it’s actually pleasant to work with No. 7. However, given the many new and different functionalities, and well-written reviews of other authors, allow me to throw in my two cents worth in our particular area of expertise: visual interface design.

cookbook10 Outstanding Metaphors in Icon Design

Denis Kortunov, 22 January 2009 Comments (4)

Icon designReviews

10 outstanding metaphors in icon designFor each and every action or object, different icons can be drawn. These can have any variations: in style, color, perspective and even metaphor. In my view, the latter is the most valuable in the design of icons — the concentrated thought. And if the metaphor is original, and humorous, then it turns out to be not just an icon, but genuinely brilliant! I present for your review my personal selection of icons based upon unusual and shining metaphors.

cookbookFirst impressions of MacOS, or von Neumann remains von Neumann even in Africa

Reviews

MacOSAs it happens the New Year found me working on a new computer running MacOS, the operating system previously unfamiliar to me. I can already hear the taunts of my dear colleagues: “What, only now? Where have you been?”. “Why the hell you need it? Are you mad?” — others say. Alas, I have to disappoint you. A story about the reasons for not adopting Mac back in ’95, ’98, 2002 and 2006 along with explanations of why I finally did it will be left outside of this note. Right now my task is to share the first “hot off the press” impressions of working on the new platform. The things that impressed me and those that surprised. Please do not take these notes too seriously. So…

cookbookMini reviews for DesignCollector

Dmitri Joukov, 29 May 2006 Comments (0)

Reviews

DesignCollector logo Quite recently, Turbomilk (represented by me, with assistance from Yegor) led a week workshop of interface design for DesignCollector. We thought about this for a little while and decided, why not posting all those mini reviews in our own blog? These hyperlinks are a must-know for anyone, who is into interface design.

We’ll start with the world-famous icon builders, and then move on to interface design tutorials. I do not even have a grain of doubt that the links to the following sites will find their place in your Bookmarks/Favorites, next to the link to Turbomilk.

cookbookThe Icon Book

If one studies the evolution of user interfaces since the 80’s of the last century up to now, it is difficult to get rid of the feeling that the trade of icon-building, which hardly was able to become an engineering science (e. g., in the Macintosh System 7 interface) can now be regarded as a fine art (Windows XP and Mac OS X).

It was with greatest surprise that I understood that the moment we’d been waiting for so long arrived a year ago. The first book dedicated to “computer pictogram design” was published in Russia.
