How to draw a good icon for Google

Denis KortunovAuthor: Denis Kortunov

Google faviconsNot so long ago we berated the new Google icon and called it bad. But denouncing something that is not yours is easy! But what icon would be good? We decided to answer this question: let’s take four designers and make them draw a good icon for Google. Such approach we call running ‘a creative boutique’.

Story by Denis Kortunov

Actually, I sincerely believe that Google needs some kind of a symbol. It has to be simple and classy. It is clear that there are no direct metaphors; therefore, the symbol will likely be out of the blue. At first the icon will be chastised by everyone, but then everybody will get used to it and settle down.

But I have subdued to a weakness by basing my icon on the current Google’s corporate identity. So what do we have? Six letters written in Catull font. Letters G and O appear in the name twice. Out of two O’s, as you can guess, we won’t be able to get anything good. So let’s stick to the capital G for its simplicity and beauty.

Google identity

Plus, we have four colors present in the logo. Blue and red appear twice.

So what shall we take for our future favicon? I will base it on the capital ‘G’ and I cannot really escape using the corporate colors: two at minimum but better all four. I will not use the font – I do not really like it and in the small icon size it will be hardly recognizable.

I will take something simple as the basis. For instance, a circle. Or several colored circles. Here is what I got first:

Open circles

Looks rather cool: three corporate colors, open circles. You could even see letter G if you try really hard. And we have obvious associations with a target. But 16×16 size revealed problems – the icon did not come out good. I continued my search.

Round G

Now we have all four colors and the letter ‘G’ is more obvious. Let’s add some glamor:

And here is the new favicon in action:

Since the subject of letters was brightly (literally and figuratively) revealed by Denis, I decided to offer a more abstract symbol. A ball. What can be simpler than a ball? Besides various balls have been used by other products featured by Google:

Google Balls

A sphere may be a metaphor for the Globe or a ball. It seems to entice you: “come play with me” which suits the Google’s image as a young and joyful company which oftentimes defies the generally accepted corporate rules.

Looking at Google’s logo let me present the ball in four colors:

Let’s add some volume (without making it too complex since we need a 16×16 icon):

I added some more glare and shadowing and voila:

It is not a secret that Google has long time quit being just a search engine. It is a real mix of various technologies and services. Conclusion: we mix all corporate colors in our TurboBlender!

Then we open Wikipedia and learn that the name Google comes from googol — the decimal number represented by one followed by 100 zeroes. Clearly, we have no other way but to create a round favicon with a hole.

Googol with hole

Let’s size it down to 16×16:

And this is how it appears in the browser:

Story by Dmitry Joukov

East or West Google is the best! But why? Because Google features excellent search engine and the whole kit-and-caboodle of other apps.

S-o-o-o-o, what makes for a good search? I believe that search is primarily about results. Now I said it all and you will be able to steal my idea. For those guessing I hereby enclose an illustration.

Great Idea about Google icon

So we take them and use them. Now we have to see what we finally got.

The icon itself looks like the infinity sign, which is not an odd thing for Google.

Comments

Nice ! They are all much better than the real favicon !

Great post.. would love to see a tutorial on how you created the icons.

Reply Neil Bradley, 17 June 2008

mmm not much better than the current one. I expected more from you guys

Very nice design :)
and nice creativity :D

Although I find the glossy geometric G quite nice, it doesn’t fit with the serif font of google. Is geometric sans-serif favicon vs. serif logo.

Reply Nacho, 17 June 2008

I think your icon looks great. Lets hope Google takes notice – I do not like the new favicon either.

Reply Eric, 17 June 2008

Denis’ logo looks very, very nice (especially on higher res) but is dangerously close to the windows logo, with the 4 colors and their positioning! Guess google wouldn’t want that ;)

Reply siep, 17 June 2008

Did you send these four to http://www.google.com/faviconideas/ ? If not, please do so.

Reply Peter Kasting, 17 June 2008

I love Denis and Valera’s, I think they are all a significant improvement over what they currently have though!

Reply Amy, 17 June 2008

Valera’s is the best, but send all four to the favicon site supplied above. I didn’t even know that existed!

Reply Karan D, 18 June 2008

I think all of them are good in there own sense, and much better than the official one (blue g), but Dimitry’s version is the one that makes the most sense brand wise, it stays with the current branding and uses elements that already exist in the logo. And the ICON version also looks like the infinity symbol!

Reply Francisco, 18 June 2008

+1 Vote for Dmitry, especially for the reference to infinity.

Reply Don, 23 June 2008

Definitely… Dmitry’s

Reply Diogo, 23 June 2008

I still prefer the lower-case purple “g” over these options. The problem with all these options (that utilize all the colors) is that they might be confused with Microsoft products. After all, the majority of browsers (however, I don’t) are going to have a Windows flag waving to the right of their location bar.

Reply Stephen James, 23 June 2008

I really like the one by Dmitry. But the one proposed by Valera Namazov is too similar to Terra’s logo (http://www.terra.com/).

Reply Frangio, 24 June 2008

I don’t know, the first one looks like Windows Media Player’s icon. And the second one remind me the old AT&T’s logo with a few changes for kids. Dmitry has the solution for our design problem.

10 out of 10 for your favicon design. You are a very professional designer. Best of luck to you.

Ha! In my previous comment (on your previous post) I said you should pitch Google on a new icon, but secretly I just wanted to see you design one, and “voila” here are four!

Beautiful work.

I personally think the uppercase G with the 4 colors is the best representation of Google, but I agree that it does seem to conflict being sans serif. Hmm.

Reply Shawn Adrian, 28 June 2008

I thought people were referring to these as the bad ones and the lower case g as the better looking ones. Seriously, these suck, specially the coloured ball, and the G, and…well all of them are pretty amateurish.

Reply Miguel de Oliveira, 28 June 2008

new google favicon is much better then old one. and no one favicon presented here is better!

Reply wiki, 1 July 2008

I like Dmitry Joukov’s, really reminds me of Google. Much better than the current.

Reply Josh, 8 July 2008

Valera and Denis had the best in my opinion. interesting takes on how the favicon should be designed. Very nice article.
